SEO for the public sector

Submitted by admin on Mon, 31/10/2011 - 08:47

The government seem to spend millions on TV and radio but why not SEO?

For example, the Highways Agency has a mission statement that includes the objective of creating "Informed travellers" - yet if you search for any motorway, their website currently appears near the bottom of the first page of results.

RDF and SEO

RDF (Resource Description Framework) can have a dramatic and positive effect on how your website is ranked by the search engines.

It is a set of rules that enable a web page (actually, the various components of that page – people, images, etc) to be described in a format that makes that content more accessible to search engines and other applications.

So, for example, if you were describing a person, as well as the content you'd see on the page, there'd be some "hidden" code to enable search engines to understand the content better.

Search marketing vs social media marketing

Everyone seems to be talking about Social Media Marketing, but if I’m honest I just don't think it's anywhere near as important, or as cost effective, for many businesses as search marketing.

Trying to force blatant advertising into the faces of consumers on a social space like Facebook can be wasted effort. Some agencies are going about it in a clumsy way and it’s annoying when you are on the receiving end.

There are a few agencies out there pitching SEO like it's a dark art - to be frank, that approach annoys us intensely.
